Being Frugal in Real Life: Saving for Vacation

I just got back from a trip to the Dominican Republic! It was a wonderful trip and a great break from reality!

Now you know I'm a frugal girl and I love to save money any way I can (be it on my bills, my groceries, clothes etc). But one of the biggest reasons why I save my money is so that I can do fun things like go on trips and do projects on my house. It seems silly - but I know many people who can't seem to cut back on their everyday expenses enough so that they can live a little. And you know what I notice about them? They have brand name clothes, go out to eat a lot and have all the newest gadgets.

Now I want all of those things too-- don't get me wrong. But I'm willing to go without, or find the VERY BEST DEAL before making a purchase. And more than that, my husband and I budget all of our money. I know it might seem like budgeting can be restrictive - but it can really help you get your finances on track and see just how much you are really spending. Also, knowing that you will be accountable for what you spend at the end of the month can really help you stay on track. And having a  goal (be it paying off a credit card, building a nest egg or saving for a tropical vacation) is a perfect way to keep things in perspective.

So my advice to you --is there something that you've been wanting? Or something that you want to do?  Then try to follow these steps:
1) Make a budget and stick to it.
2) See if there are any areas you can cut back on.
3) Focus on saving money in small ways
4) Put a picture or note about what you're saving for in your wallet. When you make a purchase you'll remember your goal
5) Don't give up!
