Frugal and Fabulous ways to save money on Halloween costumes:
- Don’t pay full price!
- Swap or borrow from friends and family
- Check out Craigslist, EBay or your local thrift store!
- Sew/make your own!
- Go through the closets: An old prom/special occasion dress can be transformed into many different things with makeup and accessories! (Beauty Queen, Movie star, etc) Also try old uniforms!
- Take a chance and wait until the last minute (usually a week, or a few days before Halloween) – My husband and I did this a few years ago and we scored two costumes for less than $8 each at Wal-Mart!
- Buy extra costume(s) at the end of each season and put them away for next year!
A few more easy costume ideas:
- · Cowgirl/guy (denim, cowboy hat, hobby horse)
- · Celebrities are pretty easy to impersonate!
- · Think decades: 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s! (Check thrift stores!)
Ways to save money on candy:
- Compare store flyers to see who has the best prices
- Pay attention to the unit price & the actual amount in the bag
- Check your local newspaper for coupons (last year I had 7 bags of Butterfingers because I was getting them for about $1.00 a bag after coupons!)
- Consider something other than chocolate: try lollipops, gum or even fruit snacks!
- Scope out bulk stores like BJ’s and Sam’s Club (just check the unit price)
- Don’t overbuy- buy what you’ll need and shut the lights off if you run out.
Ways to save on decorations:
- Check out your local dollar/discount store – you might be surprised at what they offer!
- Visit a local farm to buy pumpkins, corn stalks etc – not only will the prices be good/better than stores, you’re supporting local business!
- Pull out the crayons, scissors, construction paper & glitter and make your own!
- When items are marked down close to or after Halloween, buy a few pieces to put away for next year!
