Frugal Recipe: Homemade Marinara Sauce!

Here's an idea for all those homegrown tomatoes: homemade marinara sauce! This recipe is a variation of one from our friend Jimi, who is Italian and calls it "gravy!" Love it! Thanks Jimi! :)

Basic ingredients for one jar (feel free to multiply!)

4 or 5 - Large Tomatoes
1 - Small can of tomato paste
2 - tsp sugar
1 - tsp chopped garlic
2 - Tsp Parmesan cheese
salt and pepper to taste

Additions:
1 - tsp of Italian Seasoning
1 - tsp of Basil
1 - tsp of Oregano
1 - tsp of Onion Powder
1 - tsp of Garlic Powder

Chop tomatoes and puree in a blender or food processor. Strain out the seeds and pour into sauce pan. Add tomato paste, and ingredients and simmer until sauce has thickened and ingredients have melded (10-15 minutes). If storing, cool before bottling.

Do you make your own marinara sauce? What do you put in it? LMK!

Some last minute essentials (Price Rite 8/27)

I must say I'm impressed with the changes Price Rite has been making. It's starting to look more like a real grocery store! (Any Price Rite shoppers out there? What do you think?) Anyway, a few last minute items for tonight's girl's night!!!
  • Jar of Colonna Artichoke hearts = $1.19
  • Bag Santitas Tortilla Chips= $1.76
  • Bag of fresh dough = $.89
  • 2 Heads of Broccoli ($.72/lb @ $.99) = $.71
  • Scallions = $.50
  • 5 Bananas (1.59lb at $.54/lb) = $.86
  • Sour cream =$.89
  • Brick of Cream cheese =$.99
  • Package of Swiss cheese= $1.99
  • Parmesan Cheese= $2.29
Total =$12.07

Total left for August 2009 budget: $36.54

Ben & Jerry's Flipped Out!

So awhile back I received a coupon for Ben & Jerry's Flipped Out for participating in a Looking back carnival. (Btw, click to see my very first stockpile pictures!)

And then I won two more coupons on twitter! Life is good...

Anyway, I just wanted to let you all know that Ben & Jerry's Flipped Out is amazing! {Not that you'd expect anything from Ben & Jerry's to be less than stellar in my eye-cream loving eyes! :) } They are called "Flipped Out" because they come in a little container that you flip onto a plate so that the fudge & brownie part is on the bottom and the chocolate sauce is on the top of your peanut butter ice cream!!! At $3.50 for two these are a little more than I'd pay for ice cream - but definitely cheaper than going out for it! I recommend keeping a few of these babies in your freezer ... if you can get them to last that long.

Yep - leave it to me to write a whole post dedicated to ice cream....<3

*This post is not sponsored - just a thank you for a delightful frozen treat! :)

Giveaway & Review: Cansolidator Pantry from Shelf Reliance! (CLOSED)

I think you all know I love to stockpile. And hey, if you can get 30 cans of soup at the right price and you know you'll be able to use them - why not? For me though, (and I'm sure many of you go through this as well) - it's not always easy to follow the first in/first out rule. You know, when you buy those 30 cans of soup... Sure soup has a long shelf life, but you want to make sure you use the soup you buy first, first, and then use whatever additional soup you buy (0r whatever other product you're stockpiling) after you've gone through that first batch - right? And with some canned products, such as soup - it can be hard to rotate without a system, right? Well not anymore! :)

A few weeks ago, the wonderful people at Shelf Reliance sent me their Cansolidator Pantry to try out! The Cansolidator Pantry is a front loading food storage rotation system that holds up to 40 cans! This 11" x 20" storage unit is very sturdy and easily put together in about 10 minutes! The top and bottom horizontal pieces help to snap everything into place and keep sections even. The best part about it is it's entirely customizable - so you can have a whole line of small tomato paste cans or tuna fish while still accommodating over sized cans! With the Cansolidator Pantry I never have to worry about about taking from the front - I just load any new cans and they automatically are put in the right order. :) {Now if only I could find a system like this for all those boxes of cereal... ;) }

But let me go back - the Cansolidator is not only for stockpilers! I dare you to go look in your pantry right now. I guarantee you have at least 15 cans in there, and probably 10+ more. And with fall coming, I know you'll all be stocking up on soup! The Cansolidator will streamline your pantry (or cabinet) and make the most of your space - while helping you to have access to the cans that would normally get lost in the back! Now isn't it time you take control of your space?

Shelf Reliance is also the most trusted name in emergency preparedness! Their goal is to "help families prepare for whatever tomorrow may bring, so they feel confident if disaster strikes. We believe in educating people so you can become self-reliant."

Giveaway & Review: Together-Ware Storage Set! (CLOSED)

Sick of searching for lost lids? You need Together-Ware! Together-Ware is a simplified new storage system that connects each container and lid by a ring! No more lost lids - no more searching through mismatched pieces - the two pieces will always be together! And at $19.99 - this six piece set is a steal!

I was very excited when the wonderful people at Together-Ware offered to send me one of their six piece storage sets to try out! The six piece set comes with a 1.1 cup square, 1.75 cup square, 3 cup square, 4.8 cup rectangle, 7 cup square and 9.5 cup square - so you'll have everything you need to store your leftovers, or whatever else you'd like! :) These containers are also microwave and dishwasher safe (in the top rack) which means they won't warp! The ring also keeps the container in place during the dishwashing cycle - minimizing water collection in/on the container! I don't know about you, but that's one of my pet peeves about putting other plastic containers in the dishwasher! I hate having to shake or towel them off!

These containers are easy to stack or nest in a cabinet or pantry. You can also hang them! I love Together-Ware because their containers work against lid hoarding... or rather, my collection of lids that I can't match to containers but I still feel I can't throw out... So thanks to Together-Ware, I'm recycling my lid graveyard! :)

*Read more about Together-Ware on Together-Ware.com or call for questions or ordering information.
